Carrying the theme “Mental Health & The Heart,” the session gathered cardiologists, psychiatrists, mental health advocates, faith leaders, media personalities, and members of the public to discuss how stress, anxiety, depression, trauma, burnout, and emotional overload significantly impact cardiovascular health.

The event underscored growing medical evidence showing that chronic emotional stress can elevate cortisol and adrenaline levels, increase inflammation, damage arteries, and contribute to hypertension and long-term heart disease.

Leading the discussion was PHA Director III and Advocacy Hour Committee Chair Dr. Iris M. Garcia, joined by Philippine Psychiatric Association President Dr. Joan Mae Perez-Rifareal, actress and mental health advocate Hershey Neri, and spiritual leader Ed Lapiz.

The body is affected too, including the heart,” Garcia explained.

Dr. Garcia also stressed the importance of creating compassionate and judgment-free spaces where people can openly discuss emotional struggles and seek professional support.

“As we continue promoting heart health, may we also create safe spaces where mental health can be discussed with compassion and without judgment. Seeking help is not a sign of weakness. It is a step toward healing,” she added.

She also reminded the public that while stress is a natural part of life, unmanaged and chronic stress may lead to anxiety, burnout, depression, unhealthy coping behaviors, and increased health risks.

“Do not be afraid of the word stress. It is part of life,” Perez-Rifareal noted.

The psychiatrist encouraged individuals to protect their mental well-being through proper sleep, healthy nutrition, exercise, hobbies, emotional outlets, and strong support systems.

“The therapy really changed my life,” Neri shared.

“Healing or going to therapy is like peeling off a band-aid. It hurts because you are healing,” she said.

Neri also highlighted the importance of compassion and emotional support, particularly for people silently struggling with mental health challenges.

“Sometimes people do not need advice right away. Sometimes they just want someone to ask, ‘How can I help?’” she added.

The actress also spoke about the value of focusing on meaningful relationships and supportive communities amid online negativity and criticism.

“I have more than a thousand bashers, but I have five best friends and my parents. I have seven people who love and support me and they are my safe place,” Neri said.

She further explained how comedy and humor became part of her healing journey.

“Because laughter is medicine, I want to share my life, a beautiful life of laughter, to others,” she concluded.

SAN FERNANDO CITY, La Union — The Department of Health Ilocos Center for Health Development (DOH Ilocos CHD) is urging the public to adopt healthier lifestyles and maintain a positive mindset to reduce the risk of cardiovascular diseases (CVDs), the leading cause of death in Region I.

During the February 23 episode of Kapihan sa Ilocos hosted by the Philippine Information Agency (PIA) Region 1, Nurse V Francisco De Vera highlighted that seven out of the top causes of mortality in the region are classified as non‑communicable diseases, with cardiovascular disease ranking first.

“Seven of the leading causes of mortality in Region I are what we call non‑communicable diseases. And among them, the number one is cardiovascular disease,” De Vera said.

He explained that the prevalence of heart disease is directly linked to unhealthy habits, sedentary routines, and poor nutrition.
“If you stay home doing nothing, eating excessively without exercising, you may become obese. And obesity is one of the major causes of heart disease,” he added.

De Vera emphasized the importance of a balanced diet, urging families to choose meals that are low in salt, low in fat, limited in sugar, and rich in fiber. He noted that overweight children are becoming more common due to the widespread availability of fast food and processed options. Preparing meals at home, he stressed, remains the healthier choice.

To protect mental and cardiovascular health, he advised the public to manage stress through simple practices:
“Practice deep breathing. Take a deep breath. Walk it off and go for a short walk. Take a break from social media for a while. Once you feel okay, then that’s good.”

Aside from physical inactivity and poor diet, De Vera warned that smoking and excessive alcohol consumption significantly increase heart risks.
“If you smoke, it can cause many illnesses, including heart disease. Smoking causes blood vessels to constrict, which can lead to hypertension,” he explained.

According to DOH Ilocos CHD data, the region recorded 3,689 deaths due to cardiovascular diseases in 2024, with 2,495 caused by myocardial infarction (heart attack) and 432 from congestive heart failure.

The health department continues to strengthen its advocacy for physical activity, healthy eating, and tobacco‑free living—reminding the public that adopting positive habits today can significantly lower the risk of chronic diseases and save lives.

Unveiled in a recent study published in Science and Technology of Advanced Materials: Methods, the platform offers researchers an easier way to visualize and analyze catalyst data—no advanced coding or computational background required.

Turning Complex Data Into Clear Insight

Catalyst performance depends on many interconnected variables, which makes finding meaningful patterns a difficult task. The new tool tackles this challenge by using an approach known as catalyst gene profiling, where catalysts are expressed as symbolic sequences—much like genetic code.

By translating complex material properties into sequence-based representations, researchers can more easily compare catalysts, spot trends, and test new ideas. The platform’s web-based graphical interface allows users to interact with these profiles visually, bridging the gap between raw data and real-world experimentation.

“The system enables researchers to explore complex catalyst datasets, identify global trends, and recognize local features—all without requiring advanced programming skills,” explains Professor Keisuke Takahashi, who led the study. “By visualizing both the relationships among catalysts and the underlying gene-based features, the platform makes catalyst design more interpretable, accessible, and efficient, bridging the gap between data-driven analysis and practical experimental insight.”

A Visual, Interactive Way to Explore Materials

The tool allows users to see catalysts clustered by similarity, whether based on their physical features or their gene-like sequences. A synchronized heat map reveals how those catalyst gene sequences are calculated, offering deeper insight into what drives performance differences.

What sets the platform apart is its fluid, interactive design. Multiple visualizations can be viewed side by side, and when a user zooms in or selects a specific group of catalysts, all views update simultaneously—making exploration both intuitive and immersive.

Looking Ahead: From Discovery to Collaboration

The research team isn’t stopping at catalysts. Plans are underway to adapt the platform for other materials science datasets, expanding its potential impact across the field. Future versions are also expected to include predictive features, allowing researchers not just to explore existing materials, but to test new concepts and design next-generation, high-performance materials.

Collaboration is another key focus. By enhancing shared annotation and multi-user exploration features, the team hopes to foster a more community-driven, data-informed approach to materials discovery.

“Our goal is to make advanced materials research more intuitive, approachable, and impactful,” says Takahashi.

As materials science continues to power innovation across industries, tools like this signal a shift toward smarter, more human-centered research—where insight is just a few clicks away.
